Sky City

We have wanted for some time to go to Sky City. Kevin came in town late Friday night just so he could be part of the adventure. We woke up and got on the road to head out to Acoma. We watched a little video before getting on the bus to be taken up to the city. Acoma/Sky City is the oldest, still lived in pueblo. Technically people just live up there when asked to, during festivals, or if they are part of the Elders but it was a pretty neat place. I had hoped that we might learn a little more about the Native American way of life but it seemed that they knew just as little about their past as we have heard/read in other places. It's sad that their culture is lost to us.

If you look at the screen on this house, it had a yucca plant on it. Neat.

The far mesa was where this pueblo originally was. Long story short: There was a large fire started by some lightening and they moved to this one.

Normally you can go into the church but they are doing some stabilization renovations so we couldn't

It's a pretty amazing building that was built long ago. They often get the question that if the Spanish made them build it and they don't agree with the church, why is it still there. Our guide talked about how they see it sacred because of those of their people who died in the building of it and that some of those people are buried in the walls. To take it down would be to desecrate their resting spot.

This was our tour guide talking about this house. The people lived on the top floor during the winter and the bottom floor during the summer. The middle was for food storage.

This was a natural reservoir when it rained.

I love this adventure companion of mine!

Kevin chose to take the old path down from the pueblo back to the visitors center and took the following pictures. It's pretty amazing the staircase that was built with use. Who knows how many have climbed down this passage.
